Most visitors see the citadel in a rush between trains. You travel down the valley by rail, sleep beneath the mountains, and walk into Machu Picchu in the morning with an Indigenous Quechua guide, someone who speaks the language of the people who built it.

Day one: a car from your Cusco hotel to the train, and Expedition rail down the Urubamba to Aguas Calientes. Your night is at Hotel Ferré Machu Picchu or Hotel Santuario Machupicchu, with buffet breakfast. Day two: your guide meets you in town, the bus climbs to the gate, and you walk your circuit with time to stop and ask. We aim for Circuit 3, our favourite, or Circuit 2, with the classic view from the upper terraces; circuits are never guaranteed. A closing dinner together, then the evening train and the drive back to Cusco.
