Far south of Cusco, above five thousand metres, an Apu wears its age in colour.
Red, teal, ochre and gold run down the face of Vinicunca, laid by the mountain itself over millions of years. A quad carries you about thirty minutes across the high country, then a ten-minute walk brings you to stand before it. From there you go on into the Red Valley, where the earth turns the colour of rust and the peaks open around you.
